Radio Silence

S'up Y'all!

So, there has been some SEVERE radio silence on my part for a couple of... er... a long-ass time. The reason for this is that I have been abducted by aliens and carried off to their homeworld. It has been really hard finding an internet connection here, but I finally found a cafe with some decent wifi, and thought I better check in.

The latest goings on:

1) Med school. It is starting in 5 months. Where will I be matriculating? I don't know yet. I have an acceptance at a Boston School, but I am waiting to hear from one other school that I am very interested in. Until that all shakes out, I am...

2) Still working at the Filthy Gunslinger: Cafe and Male-Strippery. Work is fine but boring as hell. I feel like I am just killing time, but as far as killing time goes, you could do worse I suppose. As an aside, one of the coffees we serve at the Filthy Gunslinger is called Vanilla Nut Cream. Most of us call it "va-NILLA nut cream", but one of the guys there called it "va-nilla NUT CREAM", and it was funny...

3) Facebook. I was one of the first 1000 people on it back when it started (2003-ish?). I am a pioneer damn it! But essentially since I signed up, I was never really in to it. In the last week, I found that actually, Facebook can be kind of cool. I've been in touch with old friends that I have ignored for a long time, and I am meeting new friends who are also heading to med school in the Fall. So that's cool.

Other than that all and getting abducted by aliens who want to probe my tender bottom, there has really not been much going on, hence the radio silence.

BUT...

That is all about to change. Well, not right away, but soon. Because soon I will be introducing my Brand-Spanking-New Blog-About-Being-A-Real-Ass-Med-Student-Blog!! (That's "REAL-ass med student", not "real ASS-Med student"...words, hehe)

I look forward to you looking forward to reading about my misadventures in med school. Until then, hold on to your butts, cause it's going to be bedlam baby!

P.S. The Mona Lisa above is holding the (almost) exact guitar that I play! A seven-string Ibanez! Woot!

Axl Rose to the Occasion

Today I got in to medical school!

I know, not as much fanfare as you might have expected from me considering that this blog was dedicated to the struggle of getting in to med school. I got the call today right after work, but I couldn't answer it because I was talking to the music store guy about becoming a guitar teacher there. I checked my voicemail afterwards, and there it was:

"I am calling to congratulate you on being accepted to our med school in Boston! You are a wiener!"

Just like that. But he had a pretty thick accent, so he might have been calling me a "winner"... In any case, yes, it is official. The journey that might have ended in sputtering defeat sometime next May will instead continue on and on and on.

Time to party! Axl out!

By Hook or by Crook

Thus begins the long and illustrious career of god's gift to physicians.

Either that, or its just another chapter in a ridiculous and strange life, the more interesting parts of which I will perhaps reveal as appropriate anecdotes come to mind.

My name is Axl Rose. Or it would be if I had had a chance to name myself at my own birth. The reason I would have chosen that name is that I love Guns N Roses. I am a big metal head... The reason I spell it like that is because I got it like that.

A couple years ago, I decided that I wanted to become a doctor. As of today, I have applied once previously with mixed results. Ultimately, obviously, I didn't end up going to med school, as evidenced by the fact that...

I'm sitting in a cafe studying for the goddam MCAT again. Its the worst most brutal test I have ever had the privilege of studying for. I am planning to apply again this summer, 2011. I'll chronicle my journey to the best of my ability; perhaps it will make you laugh, perhaps you'll find it informative, and maybe it will be of some use to people like me.

And by people like me, I mean people who have pretty bad grades from undergrad, are slightly older than the average applicant (25 years young), and mired balls-deep in a variety of debt... with a currently overdrawn bank account... due to my ravenous appetite for destruction and gambling.

Well actually not gambling. Just destruction.

This is my story.
